General George Marshall

By: Mick Yates

The first professional soldier to be made Secretary of State in America, General George Marshall's reputation was such that Winston Churchill considered that a plan devised by him, once initiated could not be bettered.

The author of the European Recovery Plan, he was also the first professional soldier to win the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1953.

Whatever else may be said of him, Marshall seemed to straddle two worlds, and succeeded in both.
